When our table is well decorated and shows our good taste, our family and friends can easily understand our pleasure to welcome them.
 
Be open to news but don’t feel you have to
If we look at new trends regarding dishes and tableware, it seems that the phase black and white is out. We can find flower proposals and traditional patterns as plates with gold and silver at the extremity; it’s a comeback for this trend. A lot of space for our taste, but…remember! You can’t miss a white or pastel dishes set. They can fit anything, they are perfect with the old one in silver belonging to your family and with new decorations as well! A sober basis can put in evidence the main pieces on your table and their effect together with your personal style will be stronger.
 
Make an inventory
Look at your cupboard and before buying new things take note of what you have. It’s the same you should do before buying new clothes! You have to know the real reason why you need new tableware, for special occasions or for ordinary dinners? Do you want something for new guests? Are you looking for a new look?
 
Look for things that fit together!
If you don’t like your old dishes anymore and you want a more elegant set with a modern shape, I think you can go on. It’s surely a good idea! But sometimes it’s possible to get a new look only mixing new and old and using things in different ways. For example you can add under plates and they will change the old look of your table. Or you can add new bowls for your dessert or trays. And more… colored glasses, cutlery in Art Deco style, linen napkins fixed with a simple ribbon (see my article: “The magic of the napkin holders”).
 
Be careful with your decoration
Too much decoration is not a good idea because it steals the main role to food and wine. It’s very nice when decorations are inspired to season. Fill little vases with season flowers: in Spring white and buds, in Summer more colors, in Autumn little branches and pine cones because they make everything warmer. And in Winter gold and glamour are perfect!
 
Basic rules
Feel free to combine and create but don’t forget some basic rules: if you eat with your relatives or guests you have always to respect the individual space to eat comfortably (about 60/80 cm for anybody). Cutlery must be placed following the order of courses from outside to inside and the decoration on your table can’t cover the sight of the guest in front of you. People should communicate and if you have something in the middle it can be difficult!
